The Holidays Featuring Calan’s First Christmas

The end of 2010 was extra special for us with Calan’s first Christmas and many visits from friends and family. Calan’s grandparents from Oregon arrived a couple days before Christmas. We celebrated their (late and early) birthdays with a movie outing of ‘Meet the Fockers’ and coffee. Dave and Cathy Guerra, along with Dave’s parents, Humberto and Eliana made the group all the merrier by joining us. This gave the elder Guerra’s a chance to meet Baby Calan.

On Christmas Eve, Calan got to meet his Uncle Ed, who drove down from the Bay Area to be with us for Christmas. We all enjoyed watching Calan on his first Christmas. He may not have known exactly what was going on, but he seemed to love taking it all in–the people, all his cute presents, the cooking, and other festivities.

The day after Christmas, our friends Dan and Denise Smathers from Boulder came to visit for a couple days. This was an especially fun visit, as they brought their new son Luca. Luca is just 36 days older than Calan, and the two of them hit it off immediately. We all had a lot of fun watching the two little guys together. We also had fun during Calan/Luca nap times, playing the board game Cranium – one of Heidi’s favorite Christmas presents!

Calan spent new year’s eve sleeping while we hosted a pizza-making party (and some more Cranium) with a small group of friends.

Calan’s Four-month Checkup and Visit to the “Dea-Lous”

Calan did great at his four-month doctor’s visit . He’s growing and growing, gaining over 3 lbs. since his two-month checkup and falling roughly in the 30th percentile now (his head size is in the 40th). Some other things to note from the visit:

  • The doc was surprised to hear that Calan still required a swaddle (1-arm) during sleep time. Only recently has he been able to sleep with one arm out, which we started after he rolled over for the first time during sleep.
  • Heidi asked about introducing more dairy (namely, cheese), peanut butter and eggs back into her diet. We’re hoping Calan will soon grow more tolerant of these foods, but he may not be there quite yet. The doctor suggested trying a little bit more at a time, but still recommended peanut butter be avoided. Poor Heidi!
  • Calan had his second round of vaccinations. He’s a real trooper, putting up with several “pokes” of the yucky needle.
  • The doctor cautioned us about visitors this holiday season, echoing the golden rules that anyone who touches or handles Calan must wash their hands first, and if anyone is sick they shouldn’t even come close to him, i.e. stay out of the house. 🙂

After the doctor’s visit, we went to Border’s book store, where Calan enjoyed a long snooze under the canopy in his stroller. Finishing up the busy day, we went and visited Dea and Louis (“Dea-Lou”) and their 20 1/2-month-old son, Benicio. This was our first real time going to someone else’s house with Calan (other than the birth class reunion). It really  helped that they also had a little guy–who was kind enough to offer his nursery and old swing while we were there. We had a great time, eating piping hot lasagna and enjoying the best of company on a wintery, rainy day.

November End Update

It’s the end of November, and Calan has officially passed 3 1/2 months. We continue to have fun watching him develop. For example, recently (Thanksgiving day to be exact), Calan gave us his first real laugh. Perhaps his parents have finally proven goofy enough to inspire Calan to laugh out loud. What ever the case, this new expression is sure to delight us more and more as he gets older. Calan also continues to dazzle us with his wide pallet of facial expressions, particularly the way he uses his eyes and smiles. 8)

Last week, Calan accompanied us to the kids consignment sale in Ventura. (The same sale his dad and a friend started a few years ago, but have since sold). He was mostly patient for the hour or so we browsed through clothing and books for him. In the end, he (we) made it out with a respectable bag of loot. He’ll have some more clothes for when he’s bigger, and is already having fun with his new books.

Calan had a lot of fun these past few days getting to visit with his Aunt and Uncle, Ginny and Brandyn from Phoenix. He and kitty Cole also enjoyed visiting with their furry friend, cousin Wyatt. Our friend Dave and his kids Luke and Lilah also stopped by for a quick visit. Although Calan can’t yet partake in the turkey dinner, we let him sit with his mommy for a moment afterward as a reward for taking a nap quietly so his mommy could eat. 🙂

Calan’s 1st Month Video

Calan’s first video “montage” is finally complete! This fun sequence includes clips from Calan’s first month of life…in HD. 🙂

Calan - 1st Month

Calan discovers extended tummy time, spit bubbles, and the piano

Over the last couple of weeks, Calan has been enduring longer stretches of “tummy time”. Helpful for developing strength and motor skills, it’s important for babies to spend awake time on their stomachs. Calan agrees and has even made it to ten minutes during a single tummy-time session. This is much longer than the minute or two he was only able to accomplish a few weeks ago (when he’d begin to fall down on his face from the hard work!)

We’ve also noticed over the last week that little, sudsy bubbles are appearing on Calan’s mouth. We’ve learned it can be related to teething, but more likely it’s just from an increased production of saliva at this age. We figure bubbles are better than drool. 🙂

Finally, Calan enjoyed some time at the piano recently. We’ve placed Calan at the keys before–just for fun–but he always looked up and away, finding interest in something else. Yesterday, however, he actually stared down at the high contrast black and white keyboard and played some notes. Sure, he’s 98% unaware of what he’s doing, but his dad couldn’t resist capturing a few snaps of his first real ” practice session”.

Calan attends his first party …and meets a girl ;)

Last night, we attended the reunion party for our child birth class. All the parents from the class came together toting babies and sharing birth stories. The highlight of the get-together of course was when all the babies were assembled on a couch. As you can see from the photos, Calan took this opportunity to get a little closer to one of the “ladies” in the group. We’re not sure she appreciated his advances, but it appears Calan enjoyed it – way to go little man!

Calan Sets Record for Overnight Sleep

A rested Calan at a recent photo shoot

Camarillo, California – Today, Calan Alexander raised the bar for the number of hours he can sleep through the night. At just over 9 hours, Calan surpassed his previous record of 7:45. When asked for comments on his feat, Calan provided none. It appears his lack of speaking out on his accomplishment is an indication that he’s just not interested in the numbers. Perhaps they are just numbers, but to his parents it shows that hard work and perseverance (in establishing a routine!) are paying off as Calan gets closer and closer to becoming a great sleeper.

Calan’s Two-month Birthday

Calan celebrated his two-month birthday today, and did so in style. Thanks to Sona for the spiffy outfit (and again to his grandmother Kerri for the monthly birthday stickers). Most of all, thanks to Sir Calan for gracing us and the camera with his smiles during his birthday photo shoot!
